Desktop Computers

Most offices have desktop computers. They are functional, powerful, and reasonably priced.

Laptop Computers

Laptops (Notebooks) offer a high degree of portability to your system. These computers can be carried around the office, to other clinics, or to your home.

Tablet PC's

Tablet PC's are small, light, and extremely portable. They use a direct pen touch interface instead of a keyboard and a mouse. There are many pen based units to choose from and new technology is being introduced all the time in this sector. Pen systems can speed charting immensely, by allowing you to chart right at the point of care. Some examples are:

Configurations

Wired

This is the simplest way to get started with MediNotes e. In general this involves the lowest setup cost and is very practical in most situations. This involves desktop computers that are hardwired to a network server in the office.

Wireless

Add a wireless transmitter to the network, and wireless cards to mobile handheld units and you are running wireless. While the initial investment of wireless networking may be higher, it does offer a freedom that traditional wired networks do not. In a medical practice setting, wireless networking allows the physician to document the exam right at the point-of-care, and access past information quickly without flipping through past paper charts.

Terminal Services/Citrix

With this network design, applications are running on a server but the video images can be sent across a connection to another terminal. This leads to several distinct advantages: software installations/updates only involve one machine, applications can be shared wirelessly or over phone lines, and terminals do not need to be extremely powerful to run the software (all the processing is being done on the server - so 486's, early Pentium computers, and even CE units with 640 x 480 or greater resolution screens can be used).

Interfaces

Direct

A direct interface is the most efficient method for adding information and therefore the fastest. The "Touch Screen" Display and portable Tablet PC's are excellent examples of this.

Indirect

An Indirect Interface involves using another piece of equipment to enter data into the computer. The most common are the Keyboard/Mouse, Trackball, Glidepads, and Light pens.

Voice Recognition

MediNotes e accepts direct input from both Dragon NaturallySpeakingT and IBM ViaVoiceT voice recognition systems.
